Frequently Asked Questions

Bridal Shopping Guide

  • I haven’t started trying on wedding dresses yet, where do I begin?
We understand it can be overwhelming when starting the search for your dream dress. We recommend finding style and silhouette inspiration online first. Our Pinterest and Instagram are a great place to start; make sure you save your favourite dresses and take screenshots to show your stylist at your first consultation; they will guide you every step of the way when selecting your dresses and helping you reflect your personal style.
  • When should I start looking for my dress?
We recommend that you start shopping for your dress 8-12 months before your wedding date, however, we do understand that some brides need their dress in a shorter timeframe and are happy to do our best to accommodate rush orders. You can speak to our team before your appointment to discuss your options.
  • will I be charged for my appointment?
Each of our standard one-hour appointments have a booking fee of £25, which is paid at the time of booking by bank transfer or over the phone. Your booking fee is redeemable against your order if you find your dress with us. VIP appointments are charged at £50 per appointment. These are extended 90-minute bookings and include a bottle of organic prosecco or a non-alcoholic alternative and cupcakes.

    All booking fees are non-refundable.

You have up to 48 hours prior to your booking to reschedule your appointment date/time.
  • Do I need an appointment?
Yes, it is essential that all of our brides pre-book their appointment with us before coming to the boutique. This ensures that you have your allocated stylist prepared for your visit and you receive the best possible service from us. To book contact ObscureMyEmailAppointments.
  • How long will my bridal appointment take?
Our standard appointments last one hour and are fully guided by one of our stylists. We also offer chargeable VIP appointments, which are extended to 90 minutes and include a bottle of Prosecco and cupcakes for you and up to five guests.
  • Can I take photos at my appointment?
We don't allow any photos to be taken in order to protect our designer's rights and representation of our dresses.

It is really important to feel 'in the moment' at your appointment, and mobile phone photos don't always turn out great, so often, dresses can look completely different to how they looked/felt in reality.

Usually sample dresses are the wrong size which can also be distracting when looking back at your photos. When you leave your appointment we don't want you to criticise yourself in the dress because of bad angles, clips, pins or imperfect sizing, remember how you felt; visualise your dress made perfectly for you and trust your instinct.

We understand you may want to take photos to show absent friends and family your favourite dress; in this case we suggest a video call/facetime during your appointment instead.
  • How many people can I bring to my appointment?
We request that you bring up to 3 guests with you. This ensures that we avoid overcrowding at busy times and allows every bride to have a relaxed and enjoyable bridal appointment. We understand it can be disappointing for brides who want more of their loved ones involved in their experience. However, having too many different opinions can be a little overwhelming. Select 3 of your favourite people to support you, and if you find a favourite dress, you can bring different guests on your next visit. We offer VIP appointments if you wish to bring up to 5 guests and enjoy exclusive use of the boutique on weekdays. This appointment also includes an extended time of 90 minutes with prosecco or non-alcoholic refreshments and cakes for your party.

Alternatively, extended VIP appointments are available to book for bride plus 5 guests and include refreshments for your bridal party. See our appointments section for more information.
  • What should I bring with me to my appointment?
Wear nude tone, no VPL underwear. A strapless or adhesive bra can be helpful. If you don’t have one, then don’t worry; we find that most customers are happy to remove their bra during the appointment since our dresses have built-in support. You can also bring shoes if you wish to try heels with our dresses.
  • How much do your wedding dresses cost?
Our dresses are priced from £1800 to £3500.
If you purchase one of our made-to-measure gowns, all alterations are included in the price. For designer collections there are additional alterations fees which we will discuss when you place your order.
We are happy to help brides on a budget and have a large sample sale room with wedding dresses priced from £300.
  • What sizes are your samples?
We try to have as much variety as possible and stock sizes UK 6 - 18. If we don’t have a dress you love in your size, our stylists will be able to offer you a similar style or work their magic using clips or extra pieces of fabric to fit the sample to you as best they can.
  • What happens if I like a dress from one of your designers, but you don’t stock the sample?
If we don’t stock a specific dress you love from one of our designer collections we can order ready-to-wear samples on a loan basis for you to try on. There will be a small fee for this service determined by the supplier.

Dresses And Order Process

  • What’s the difference between made-to-measure and made-to-order?
Getting a made-to-measure gown from us means that your dress will be made by our team here at the La Novia dressmaking studio. We will take your body measurements and create your dress from scratch so that it is fitted perfectly to you.

Our made-to-order dresses can be found in our ready-to-wear collections. These are ordered from the brand in the size closest to you, and we will then do any alterations to make sure your dress fits like a glove.
  • Where are your dresses made?
At La Novia, everything happens on site. Our made-to-measure collections are created here at our Edinburgh boutique, where we also have our own dressmaking studio. We use luxury, sustainable bridal fabrics for all of our designs as well as traditional dressmaking techniques to ensure your dress is of the highest quality.
  • Can I customise my dress?
Yes! We love it when we can get creative with our brides. Our stylists will advise you on customisable options available, and will show you fabric swatches and accessories to help you create your dream wedding dress. We also have an in-house design and dressmaking team who are here to help with any special requests.
  • How do I place my order?
Your stylist will guide you through the ordering process at your appointment. When you find your dress, we will then take your measurements and require a 50% non-refundable deposit to secure your order. After that, your order details will be passed to our studio team who will be busy working on your dress, and you won’t need to worry about anything until you come back for your first fitting.

If you decide you want to order a dress after leaving your appointment, we are happy to process this over the phone for you and will arrange to take your measurements at a time which is convenient. Call us on 0131 556 3445.
  • What is the payment process?
Upon ordering your dress we require a non-refundable 50% deposit.
The balance (remaining 50%) plus any additional alterations fees should be paid in full on the day of your first fitting. All orders are final and we cannot offer refunds.
We accept card (excluding American Express), cash and BACS payments.
  • How many fittings will I need and when should I book them?
Everyone is different, but we find that most brides have two fittings before their dress is ready to collect. Your first fitting should occur 4-6 weeks before your wedding date. This means that there shouldn’t be any significant size changes before the day. The second fitting will then be booked roughly two weeks later, and this is where we will finalise any minor finishing touches.

If you require any additional fitting appointments, they are charged £50 each. Your first two fittings are free of charge and included in your order.

  • Can I change my mind after placing the order?
Unfortunately all orders are final and we cannot offer any refunds after the initial deposit is paid.
If you feel that you’re unsure of your dress choice and it is from our in-house collection, in some cases it may be possible to amend your order if we haven’t started making your dress yet. Call your stylist as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Privacy Policy

Unlike the privacy policy on most websites, this one isn't copied from a generic template; it's been written from scratch by humans who have considered what modern websites do, how most people interact with them and what most people are bothered about when it comes to online personal data.

We've avoided legal jargon and covering every minute detail down to the nth degree. Instead, we've focused on what we consider to be the essential stuff and answering some of the real world questions you might have.

We respect your right to privacy and will always do our absolute best to ensure we conform to not just the laws at the time, but also our moral obligation to you. That's why we will never knowingly allow anyone to use any data about you that we hold unless legally required to do so, and we will always keep it secure and (where possible) will remove all trace of it at your request.

We usually only hold names and email addresses you provide us, but at times we may hold other identifiable data about you, gathered with your consent, to carry out our day to day business with you. For instance, you might supply us with data as part of an enquiry, or as part of a purchase, or a booking process for a service, etc. In all instances, this data is destroyed once it is no longer relevant or required or held securely if it forms part of a service agreement with you or there is a legal requirement for us to retain. In which case we can hold data for up to seven years. Like most websites, this site uses cookies (read more about them below) and also like most websites this site may share your IP address (read more about them below) with some online services. By continuing to use the site, you agree to this. We don't do either of these things because we're evil, it's just for a modern website to work the way most people want them to work, you have to! DON'T PANIC though, for the majority of users you're not directly identifiable by these actions. Big Brother isn't watching!

Cookies are tiny files that are added to your computer as you use and interact with websites. They are used mostly for good: To improve your experience, sometimes for bad: Search engines, Social sites etc. may use them to track what a computer (the computer, not the person) is looking at. Many like Google will use them to target you with adverts and for analytics, which results in them being able to build a profile of what you do online. You will get these cookies added to your computer when you land on certain websites, like Google, Youtube, Facebook etc. This site makes use of Cookies, mainly so we can be sure to only show you certain content once, for example, popups or reminders.

Cookies can sound a bit Orwellian and "Big Brother", but mostly they're pretty harmless and unless you land on a website that requests your data and you offer it, the data they hold is mostly anonymous, they don't have your name and email address etc. You can clear out your cookies by clearing your browser history. However, as we said this site from time to time will use cookies (never for data gathering or advertising). It is generally good practice to install a cookie manager so that you can see what websites install what cookies, as most have them but few admit to it.

Cookies generally fall into three categories: Session, 1st Party Persistent & 3rd Party. A fuller explanation of these is at the bottom of this privacy policy.

IP Address

An IP address is a unique number that identifies your computer on the internet; it is in the form of 111.222.333.444. Lots of services, like YouTube, Facebook etc., requires that websites send them your IP address before they allow sites to display things like embedded video, or Facebook elements, and so on. In reality, your IP address isn't personal data, as 99% of the time, you can't be identified by it. Regardless, some consider do consider it as such, so to keep ourselves in the clear we've added this bit to our privacy policy: On occasion, your IP address may be shared with some service providers. Emails Emails are typically kept until our inbox is full and we have a clear out and delete or archive all the old ones. We never use addresses obtained from emails for anything other than responding to the emails you send us. We don't harvest these emails for other purposes. Once we clear out our inbox and delete old emails from you, your details are gone.

Newsletter Sign-up

If we have one, our newsletter sign-up process is distinct from other areas of consent when it comes to your data and uses a double opt-in/2 step verification confirmation that complies with all the latest regulations (GDPR, etc.). It includes a clear indication from you that you wish to be added to our newsletter list. There is no ambiguity in our signup process; you can’t sign up by mistake nor can anyone signup with your email address due to the double opt-in/2 step verification. We record the location, time and place that you signed up. Removing yourself from our newsletter list is easy: Just click the unsubscribe link in the newsletters we send or use the Unsubscribe feature on our website.

We don't share our newsletter lists with anyone else, other than the service we employ to send out our newsletters.

Data Protection Officer

If you have any questions about our privacy policy and your data, or would like to know what data we hold about your you can contact us using the details on our regular contact page, making the subject of any emails “FAO: Data Protection Officer”. We will then forward your email to our DPO who will respond accordingly.

In most circumstances, we will respond within 30 days.

If we suspect any abuses of this requirement (multiple requests in a short space of time etc.), we reserve the right to refuse.

For most requests to be processed, we will need you to provide proof as to who you are and that you have a lawful right to access the data.
